Business Process Outsourcing – Is It Bad For America?
There is a lot of discussion on outsourcing of some services to countries like India and Phillipines. It is true that jobs are being lost, but then America has steadily been losing jobs in many of its industries for the past half century.
To put things in the right perspective, America has lost jobs in all these industries – automobiles, steel, shipbuilding. textiles, toys, software, consumer electronics and many others. This loss of jobs has probably more to do with the disparity in the standard of living between America and the developing countries than any other factors. Over the past century, Americans have raised their standard of living to a point where they have priced themselves out of labour intensive industries. Take steel for example. Why would any corporation want to produce steel in the USA where on average a steel worker earns atleast $40 an hour when they can produce the same steel in China or India paying the worker there just $1 an hour?
